While much of America is thinking mostly of the world up today, the state’s law banning assault weapons was ruled unconstitutional by the Third Circuit. The bill had been carefully crafted to fit within the framework of the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision, but was still held to limit the rights of any idiot who wants to tote an AR15.
The ruling, including the dissent, is a staggering 192 pages. The law criminalized having an unlicensed assault weapon; licenses could be issued but issuing them meant a background check. Who would want a criminal to have an assault weapon? Evidently, the majority of the Third Circuit does.
Considered a victory by the gun lobby, this decision conflicts with decisions from other circuits, making it a certainty to land in front of the Supremes, who just a short time ago asked Congress to provide them more protection. But, we, ordinary citizens will not have the same protection. We will now be at the mercy of any unlicensed owner of an AR-15, or the many other kinds of assault weapons designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill people.

Thoughts for the Day
Its legislative scheme is consistent with our Nation’s long-held tradition of regulating particularly dangerous weapons and was responsive to dramatic technological changes and horrific uses of that technology, which legislatures of the past could not have foreseen. The majority disregards democratic will and Supreme Court precedent, risking a dangerous aftermath for the People of New Jersey and those beyond.
