A Familiar Playbook

Many of us laughed when we first heard that the 2028 elections might be cancelled due to a claim of “national emergency,” but it is not a laughing matter any longer now that Trump’s personal lawyer Cleta Mitchell told Southern Baptist pastor and Newsmax host Tony Perkins that if such an emergency were declared, elections could be halted.

We do have the 2026 Congressional elections beforehand, but we must wonder what will happen as politicians from both sides move to cement their advantages.  We had thought the courts would save us, but many have caved in, especially on the issue of protecting minority voting rights. No, the courts, especially the Supreme Court, will not save anyone’s voting rights.

We are seeing a familiar playbook.  Those in power claim there are riots in the streets and there must be strong action to stop disorder in the Nation. They’ll let the Moral Mondays of Rev. William Barber continue – who ever thought some preacher and a small group in the Capitol Rotunda was a threat?  Certainly, not Pilate.

Prayer for the Day

Feeling as if we live in troubling times, O Lord,

   We call on you for strength and guidance;

Unsure of where our Nation is heading, O God,

We feel as if the old guardrails aren’t there.

Give us perseverance for we flounder about,

Looking to discern what it is we need to do.

In the name of the One who is our Model,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The business of government and the security of our nation will not be dictated by extremist attention seekers.  I will continue to hold the government accountable and meet with the career intelligence professionals who keep our country safe.

Sen. John Warner after meeting was cancelled based on Laura Loomer claims

What we face will not be defeated in a day. But it will be defeated by a moral movement of people who remember who we are, take nonviolent direct action to defend the most vulnerable, and build power to reconstruct a democracy that works for all of us.

Rev. William Barber, leader of Moral Mondays in the U.S. Capitol

To you, O Lord, I call, my rock, do not refuse to hear me,

For if you are silent to me, I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.

Hear the voice of my supplication, as I cry to you for help,

As I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.

            Psalm 28: 1-2
