Today is Finnish Independence Day, the day when Lenin, who really believed in the self-determination of peoples, simply said, yes, to Finland’s request for independence from the newly established Bolshevik Revolution. Putin, however, who claims to uphold the traditional values of civilization, is another story. He would support Tennessee and the other state that seek to ban transgender care.
It’s notable that the states banning such are Republican, which when it comes to books and vaccination policy, say they support “parental rights.” If these people support parental rights in vaccination policy, why not here? It’s worse than that. It’s little more than outright fear of something different.
The Justices hearing the matter, brought on behalf of parents and their children, raises the question of how far a state can go in the health care decisions parents can make about their children. Getting stuck on bathroom use and sports only serves to divert us from the real issues in this case: whether we cut off a very small group from their right to determine their own futures.
Prayer for the Day
You know, O God, we fear what we do not understand,
And that we build walls to keep those different from us out;
But you call us to welcome the full spectrum of your creation,
Even those who are marginalized by many.
Open our minds, O Lord, and give us understanding,
So we view all in this world as our brothers and sisters.
In the name of the One who accepts all,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The prohibited purpose here is treating gender dysphoria. The whole thing is imbued with sex… It's a dodge to say it’s not based on sex.
Justice Elena Kagan, in response to Tennessee Solicitor General
I'm worried that we're undermining the foundations of some of our bedrock equal protection cases.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, commenting on the case before the Court
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work done in the creation. .And God rested from the work and God blessed the seventh day because the work of creation was complete.
