A Modest Proposal Revisited

Fantastic!  The new regime has figured out another way to unload our Nation of unwanted immigrants – the National Weather Service now no longer provides any warnings of storm, tornadoes, floods, and other people-killing events in languages other than English.

Just think of it—a cheaper way to eliminate immigrants without the expense of having to arrest, detain, and deport them.  Several years ago, a Guatemalan family unfamiliar with storms and not having warnings in Spanish, sheltered themselves in a drainage ditch. Because they did not understand the flood warnings, given only in English, the entire family was washed away.  Obviously cheaper than having to deport them.

Now that English has been declared to be the official language of the realm, imagine what would have happened if Puerto Rico had never received hurricane warnings in Spanish when Hurricane Maria struck.  No need for so many paper towels.

Prayer for the Day

Protector of the poor and vulnerable, forgive us our uncaring,

   For we seem to live in our own little bubbles of isolation;

Justifying our actions with excuses of cost-cutting,

   We turn aside from the real needs in our Nation.

Shake us from or complacency as only you can,

   And push us to confront the evil of the power around us.

In the name of the One who did not shirk,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

It’s extremely disappointing. I think about these communities a lot and I believe that no matter what language you speak or where you come from you deserve to have this life-saving information.

In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor—

   Let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.

For the wicked boast of the desires of their heart,

   Those greedy for gain curse and renounce the Lord.

In the pride of their countenance the wicked say, “God will not seek it out”;

  And all their thoughts are, “There is no God.”
