A New Day for Corporate Greed

There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives.  So far, we have results from 412 of them. Democrats will need to win most of the outstanding balance to keep control of the House, which is unlikely.  One important issue is what this massive change will do for us as a Nation in terms of budget priorities regarding the poor.

Will the make more money as fast as you can mentality result in Congress supporting corporate greed?  We need to do more than hope not.  There is no question that there will be major changes in policy regarding food and housing assistance.

We Americans have short memories; most probably don’t remember the effects of the massive social service cuts after Ronald Reagan was elected in 1981. Corporations are licking their chops because they will be the beneficiaries of tax cuts just as proposed in Project 2025.  The question is how will we who support programs for the poor respond.   We need to remember that greed is not a virtue.

Prayer for the Day

Torn and jagged, brokenhearted and at times in sorrow,

     We come to you, O God, for solace and redemption;

Smooth our souls as the rocks of the sea become smooth stones,

    Shaping fullness into our nature as comes the fullness of love.

May the gifts you have given us inspire us to lives of sharing,

     As we look to your call to feed the poor and house the homeless.

In the name of the One who fed the multitudes,

      Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

            John F. Kennedy, President (1917-1963)

Few things have more impact than nutrition on a child's ability to survive, learn effectively and escape a life of poverty.

            Ann Veneman, former Republican Secretary of Agriculture

Is this not the fast that I choose; to loose the bonds of injustice,

   To undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go fee, breaking every yoke?

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,

   And bring the homeless poor into your house;

When you see the naked to cover them,

   And not to hide yourself from your own kin?

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,

    And your healing shall spring up quickly;

Your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

  Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;

You shall cry for help, and God will say, Here I am.

            Isaiah 58:6-9
