How can we forget Minneapolis last January? A city where two Americans were murdered by ICE agents and a third shot in the leg? Believe it or not, DOJ has charged an ICE agent with lying about the third. In an unsealed indictment, agent Christian Castro has been charged with lying about the circumstances that caused him to shoot Julio Sosa-Celis in the leg.
. I
Mind you, ICE agent Castro was not charged with serious charges, but of only lying about the incident. The ICE agents who killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti have never been held accountable. In fact, as result of the lack of response to those shootings, several FBI investigators resigned.
There have been more shootings since January and more resignations and no serious investigations. In the Castro case, prosecutor Matt Evans objected to the lesser charges filed against him and was dismissed the next day. We have to ask where is justice if ICE agents can shoot and only face minimal chares, if any?
Prayer for the Day
Where is justice, O God, we cry,
When people are shot by our own government?
What is it that we, the people, need to do,
When faced with government that does not act?
Rouse us, O Lord, so we are able to have answers,
Even if uncomfortable and not what we want.
In the name of the One who called power to account,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
This is being directed by the Main Justice and the US Attorney. I objected in the strongest possible terms and fought it as hard as I could. It wasn’t enough.
Prosecutor Matt Evans fired for his efforts
The level of trust right now in the federal government is just not there. If they can’t allow the U.S. attorney’s office to indict [Castro] on civil rights violations, I don’t know why anyone would have any confidence that they would be doing a thorough and competent investigation of the shootings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti.
Mary Moriarty, Prosecutor for Hennepin County, Minnesota
You shall not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept bribes, for a bribe binds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right. Justice, and only justice, shall you pursue
