Almost Over

Well, we finally made it to Election Day.  No question, without a doubt, we have seen political ads that go beyond the pale, like the one in Ohio dragging out an estranged mother still angry that her daughter had gone to the police after she had been raped by her stepfather.

Both major parties have contributed to the low level of campaign tactics, notably the one in Alaska where a Dan J is on the ballot against the incumbent, Dan S. And now the FBI is actually “visiting” Dan J’s contributors.  That’s nothing short of intimidation.

Tomorrow my cell phone will not be full of “just give $2” to a whole host of candidates, and my mail slot will not have at least a tree’s worth of flyers for this or that one who will save or public schools, turn Washington around, and so forth.  But honestly, we should all be concerned about the post-election lawsuits that will most likely emerge. This may be the election that will never end.

Prayer for the Day

Torn and jagged, brokenhearted and at times distressed,

     We come to you, O God, for solace and strength;

Smooth our souls like rocks of the sea becoming smooth stones,

Shaping fullness into our nature as comes the fullness of love.

May we reflect your justice to transform the world,

Remembering that your righteousness will triumph in the end.

In the name of the One who is our guide,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Voting is how we participate in a civic society – be it for a president, be it for a municipal election.  It’s the way we teach our children – in school elections – how to be citizens and the importance of their vote.

Loretta Lynch, former Attorney General (2015-2017)

As societies grow decadent, language grows decadent, too.  Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action.  You liberate a city by destroying it.  Words are used to confuse, so that at election time, people will solemnly vote against their own interest,

            Gore Vidal, American novelist (1925-2012)

How much better to get wisdom than gold!

To get understanding rather than silver.

            Proverbs 16: 16
