No, God! Again? Again? NO, God, please, not again. There are the usual pictures, so terribly familiar to us – students huddled, those who were lucky enough to escape. Students crying. When, O God, when will this carnage be over? And it’s only September.
And, you, high and mighty Justices, you who ruled against a semblance of gun sanity, God have mercy on your souls. How can you, Honorable Justices, claim that anyone should have access to an assault style rifle used by the killer – for he is a killer – under the protection of the Second Amendment?
Georgia has some of the weakest gun laws in the Nation. One can carry a gun without a permit, although you’re supposed to be 18 to buy a gun. So how did this 14-year old kid get his hands on such a weapon? Don’t worry, the right-to-bear-arms people will be out there simply calling him deranged while opposing red flag laws and background checks.
Prayer for the Day
Scenes so familiar to us, O God, take them away!
Remove the sight of the dead and wounded from our eyes.
Screams of parents who will never see their children again,
May they sear the consciences of those opposing gun laws.
God, shake us awake, take away our insane fantasies,
For too many have died and too many will yet do so.
In the name of the One who calls us to action,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
What should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart.
President Biden on the news from Winder, Georgia
And it is just outrageous that in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their children to school, worried about whether or not their children will come home alive.
Vice President Kamala Harris, in Georgia
Give heed to my words, O Lord, give heed to my sighing;
Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
In the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.
