Another Betrayal

It may have been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon, the fictional town in Minnesota, but it has not been a quiet week anywhere else. Between executive orders not just upending much of our national vision of who we are and threats to invade Panama, we may wonder if this will be the way we are going to be for the next four years.

One act seems more egregious than another. Suspending refugee admissions for the wives and children of the afghans who fought alongside the U.S. there has got to go to close to the top of the list.  We are supposed to take care of people who help us, and now 1600 wives and children get to stay in dangerous situations under the Taliban.

No matter what one may think of our policies in Afghanistan, we promised to protect those who supported us.  Biden dallied and kept postponing the resettlement. Now, they are totally betrayed.  How can we expect anyone to believe in us when we engage in such acts of betrayal?

Prayer for the Day

We know, O God, to be forgiven, we need not just to repent,

   For repentance means changing our behavior;

We Know, O Lord, to be forgiven, we must be transformed,

   So that our actions truly reflect our words of promise.

Hold us and help us, O Holy One, to live our promises to others,

   So we have a righteous and just Nation.

In the name of the One who calls us to repentance and action,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Pausing refugee resettlement without exempting Afghan allies is not just a policy decision — it’s a betrayal of those who risked everything for America,

Betrayal is common for en with no conscience.
