Brain Drain

The Science Section of Tuesday’s New York Times now carries a piece entitled “Lost Science,” about some researcher and research project eliminated by the White House as part of its attack on science. In response to this know-nothing approach France has now welcomed 41 American scientists in its “Choose France for Science” program.

The US canceled projects include high energy physics, climate studies, and medicine.  And France is not the only European nation inviting U.S. nationals Germany and the Nordic nations are not far behind. We are experiencing a brain drain for sure.

Back here at home, the FDA claims it is taking a stricter approach to vaccine approvals in refusing to even review a mRNA flu vaccine, not to mention questioning whether we need annual flu shots at all, ignoring the advice of several former FDA officials and physicians. Perhaps it is the way to reduce Medicaid/Medicare costs: fewer shots for older people will certainly decrease their numbers.

Prayer for the Day

We search for your voice, O God, but hear only the winter wind,

   But we know beneath the snow the earth stirs with sounds of life;

We look up into the sky, O God, but see only gray clouds

  And we wait for the sun to break forth giving us hope and life.

Transform us from a people afraid of our own shadows

  Into your people of courage and strength.

In the name of the One who gives us a vision of hope,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

In France, we believe in science.  Through “France 2030”, we have invested more than €30 million to advance health, climate action, artificial intelligence, and fundamental sciences. Science has found its home.

The Native Biodata Consortium is the first nonprofit data and sample repository within the geographic bounds and legal jurisdiction of an American Indian nation, on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in Eagle Butte, S.D.  Out of our $9 million grant from the N.I.H., we lost $6 million. It all went away.
