Brilliant Like Ostriches

It’s April 30, the last day of “Earth Month.”  Since we’ve got such wonderful weather and shouldn’t worry about the increase in tornadoes and severe storms we are now experiencing, we really don’t need a climate assessment. So the brilliant minds of the new regime simply dismissed the hundreds of scientists who had been working on the Congressionally mandated report.

The last report was in 2023 and is used by business, insurance companies, as well as state and local agencies to plan for the impact of our changing climate. The entire process is overseen by the Global Change Research Program established by Congress in 1990.  But the brilliant minds, upset by how it is used by environmental groups, seen as superfluous, have just quashed the whole idea of any assessment.

This goes hand-in-hand with the ostrich mentality now in charge. Just like destroying data on health, if the data do not exist, we don’t need to plan for any catastrophe on the horizon. Then we won’t need FEMA or public health.  Now, wasn’t that simple?

Prayer for the Day

Oh, God, we pray, save us from the idiocy of greed,

   For as we become more vulnerable, the rich will not suffer;

Oh, Lord, we pray, save us from imposed blindness,

   With its pretense of denying reality in the world.

Shake our leaders from their cowardice and complacency,

   And move them to truly care for the people of our Nation.

In the name of the One who shakes us into action,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

This is as close as it gets to a termination of the assessment. If you get rid of all the people involved, nothing’s moving forward.

            Jesse Keenan, a co-author on the last climate assessment.

A daily risk for severe weather will continue to unfold across the nation's heartland through the final days of April, featuring storms with very large hail, destructive winds and even strong tornadoes.

The Lord will roar from on high, and the voice of God will be uttered;

   The Lord will roar mightily against those in the fold,

And shout like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.

   The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth,

For the Lord has an indictment against the nations, entering into judgment

  And the guilty will be put to the sword, says the Lord.
