Buying Green

There’s some good news on the environmental front in spite of the new regime’s attempts to turn us back to a dirty and sooty 19th century way of life.  Although Wall Street opted out of the Net-Zero Carbon Alliance, fossil fuel financing fell by 25% among the six largest banks, with renewables increasing.

According to a Price Waterhouse Survey 46% of us are looking for more sustainable products.  It’s easy, however, to be fooled by companies engaging in greenwashing. So, how do we get past deceptive marketing?

A box of cereal may say that it’s made from recycled materials but contain pesticide laden contents.  The Federal Trade Commission created a list called Green Guides that can give us more information on the items we purchase. A picture of a windmill or a cow grazing on the grass doesn’t mean the item is organic, meeting certain standards, or really environmentally friendly.

Prayer for the Day

Singing of the beauty of your creation, O God,

    We join with all your creatures acknowledging its wonder;

But even as the music resounds in our ears, we despair,

    Trying to free ourselves of the trivial things that take over our lives.

Reveal your light through those we would rather not know,

    Making them and us instruments of your glory.

 In the name of the One who is your instrument,

     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The wooing of the earth …also means preserving environments in which to experience mysteries transcending daily life and from which to recapture, from a Proustian kind of remembrance, the awareness of cosmic forces that have shaped mankind.

            Rene Dubos, scientist, environmentalist, writer (1901-1982)

I accept with all my heart and with gratitude for what nature has done for me , and I am pleased with myself and proud of myself that I do.

            Michel de Montaigne, French essayist (1533-1592)

But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you;

   Ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you,

And the fish of the sea will declare to you

   Who among all of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?

            Job 12: 7-9
