Celebration?

Everyone deserves a birthday party. And, if you’re the President, you get to throw a bash of sorts.  June 14 happens to also be known as “Flag Day” because in 1777 the Second Continental Congress officially approved the design of the first American flag, certainly something to celebrate, but with title boxing matches in front of the White House?

On a day we should be celebrating a design, we are to be treated to violence? And that’s just the beginning.  The Trump organization has created “Trump 250” as a trademark for shirts, button, and golf balls. And then there is the giant arch on the White House lawn for the birthday bash in front of the White House with its demolished East Wing.

Tucked inside the OBBB passed last year is $150 million for events for the America 250, but the Interior Department has turned $100 million to “Freedom 250,” the Trump family corporation with $25 million to America 250.  Graft used to mean skimming off the top, but this is carving the turkey leaving only the carcass.

Prayer for the Day

Dwelling in the dark of the night of our souls,

    We come to you, O Lord, for respite and rest;

Searching for the peace that only you can give,

    We approach you with awe and trembling.

Save us from the temptation to search for easy answers,

    And restore in us a faith that opens us to justice.

In the name of the One we follow,

    Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen

Thoughts for the Day

America is the only nation in the world founded on a creed.

            G.K. Chesterton, English Christian writer (1874-1936)

What the people want is very simple—they want an America as good as its promise.

            Barbara Jordan, civil rights activist, U.S. Representative (1936-1996)

Rise up, O God, plead your cause;

   Remember how the impious scoff at you all day long.

Do not forget the clamor of your foes,

   The uproar of your adversaries that goes up continually.

            Psalm 74: 22-23
