Climate and Weather

Over the weekend news leaked out that the EPA, which is supposed to protect our environment, not destroy it, will eliminate all limits on greenhouse gas or carbon dioxide emissions coming from coal and gas plants because they obviously do not contribute to the climate catastrophe we are facing, which, of course, doesn’t exist.

You’ve got to be kidding.  Melting ice sheets at both poles, that doesn’t exist. Increased heat, that doesn’t exist.  Houses falling into the sea in North Carolina, an act of God, which I wonder if these people even really believe in.  Didn’t God tell us to be stewards of the earth, not its destroyers?

And since the climate is the same as it’s always been, no more need for the National Weather Service to give long range forecasts or estimate the costs of a storm.  We had at least several days warning for Sandy, Helene, and some other storms, but cuts at the Service and its parent NOAA will cost lives – this year. Ideological denials have results.

Prayer for the Day

Turning their backs on science and research, O God,

   The Nation’s leaders give into the greed of industry;

Refusing to see the damage that can be done, O Lord,

    Corporations only care about their bottom line.

But you, O Holy One, see how greed can destroy us,

    Even those who care not for others on earth.

In the name of the One who is our strength in these times,

    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life.

Letter from five former NWS directors to Congress and the President (May 2)

In an era of climate change causing increased extreme weather, we should be spending more on NOAA and the National Weather Service, not less. This is a very poor way to spend our tax dollars.

You set the earth on its foundations, so that it shall never be shaken.

   You cover it with the deep as with a garment;

       The waters stood above the mountains.
