Destroying Our Children

Guess it’s better to be a farmer than a family needing health insurance.  Yesterday the government announced an $11 billion to farmers, primarily in the Midwest from tariff revenues.  Families in West Virginia, Wyoming, Arkansas, and Alaska, among several others, however, will face the brunt of health care premium increases.

The primary losers in the health insurance fight are children. Nearly half—HALF! – of US children rely on Medicaid.  Don’t you think that perhaps our “system” of health care needs changing? Families who wait until their children are so sick and use the ER for care have faced intervention by child protective services in their states as families are faced with the choice of food or medical care.

And then there are the cuts to food assistance programs, SNAP, school lunches, all in the name of stopping “waste, fraud, and abuse” while $20 billion was sent to Argentina, much more than to bailout farmers, primarily with the aim of getting its autocratic president re-elected. This is America first?  It’s more like America last.

Prayer for the Day

There are times when we do not know what to do, O Holy One,

    Times when we are caught in the struggles of everyday life;

Promising your steadfast love even when we falter and fail,

Move us beyond our failings and inability to change.

Awaken us and empower us to show our care for others,

By making real change for all who need help and support.

In the name of the One who is our strength,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

We’ve not voted on it. It didn’t come through the Agriculture Committee. If you look at Article I in the Constitution for tariffs, that’s under the sole discretion of the United States Congress, so he’s just acting impetuously and creating chaos.

            Rep. Jonathan L. Jackson (D-Ill)

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, meanwhile, proclaimed without evidence that most Americans, “particularly under 50,” need only a “catastrophic plan,” not comprehensive health insurance.

Whitney Curry Winbush, The American Prospect (12/9/2025)

To you, O Lord, I call: my rock, do not refuse to hear me,

For if you are silent, I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.

Hear the voice of my supplication, as I cry to you for help,

As I left up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.
