Disasters of Many Kinds

There are many kinds of disasters.  The announcement regarding tariffs is just one, sure to hurt mostly middle-income and lower income people, possibly the ones who voted in the new regime.  As a former treasury official said, this policy is what astrology is to astronomy, creationism is to biology, and what RFK is to vaccine science.

The physical storms in Tennessee and Missouri provide a different kind of disaster, made even worse as FEMA has experienced cuts in both relief and preparedness programs, thanks to the emperor who is running our government. Both lives and communities could be saved, but these states, which voted in the new regime will suffer.

The continuing climate crisis, denied by the new know-nothings, will create even more kinds of disasters, and not just in the extreme weather we face. We face a spiritual disaster as a result of our continued destruction of God’s creation. Turning inward, we will care less for others as fossil fuel barons continue to ravage the earth.

Prayer for the Day

Unable to pretend that we are something we are not,

   We struggle with the demands of your Gospel on our lives;

Forgive us our despair, our hopelessness, and our fear,

    For we know that they close the doors to living faithfully.

 Awaken us by your Holy Spirit to a fuller dimension of faith

    Leading us to find in our neighbors the opportunities for love.

 In the name of the One who shows us a new way to live,

     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The administration now has one of FEMA’s most effective programs on the chopping block. [designed to work with low income and disadvantaged communities] It’s oversubscribed almost every year.

            Sharon Uvaldy, climate resiliency policy analyst

With more severe weather and increasing flooding the next few days, we are not able to immediately survey all the damage, as our focus will remain on warning operations.

            Darone Jones, National Weather Service

Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”

   They are corrupt, the commit abominable acts; there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven on humankind

   To see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.

They have all fallen away, they are all alike pervers;

   There is no one who does good, no, not one.

            Psalm 53: 1-3
