Drought – that means no rain, either from the sky, and, perhaps, in our political life. Campaigning on a personal platform of retribution, Trump has won the presidency. At this point, however, many seats in the House of Representatives remain in question.
But, back to drought. The weather forecast holds no promise of rain. English-style green lawns are being watered artificially ---mine is not. Keeping grass green accounts for more than a third of water use. Drought also exists in our hearts, keeping us from loving others as we should. That kind of drought is destructive.
Beginning with the words, “We the people,” the Constitution tells us that we must live in community. We cannot have community as long as we shove the marginalized and the poor aside, refusing them water. Ending the drought in our hearts in the coming days will be necessary if we are to survive as a society and a Nation.
Prayer for the Day
Holy One, we come to you at a time of confusion,
Relying on our own resources rather than trusting in you;
Afraid not only of the changing world around us, we struggle,
For we know not where our questions sometimes lead us.
Moor us, O merciful God, so we are not like ships without rudders,
And help us, to be open to the unexpected ways we can serve you.
In the name of the One who is our help in the struggle,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. [The] heart withers if it does not answer another heart. [The] mind shrinks away if [it] hears only the echoes of [its] own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.
Pearl S. Buck, novelist and writer (1892-1973)
I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states ... Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.
Martin Luther King Jr., from his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail"(1929-1968)
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all our mind, and with all your strength. The second is this. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.
Mark 12: 30-31
