Forgotten Lessons

The old satiric remark about Hitler wanting peace went like this:  a piece of this and a piece of that.   Now we have Putler, another dictator wanting a piece of this and a piece of that.  Repeating the mistakes of appeasers will only create more of an incentive to recreate the Old Soviet Union, the collapse of which that Putin called a disaster.

Our new appeasement policies smacks of Chamberlin holding a paper in his hand signed by Herr Hitler, which wasn’t worth anything. Selling out Ukraine gives Putin the okay to move against other smaller countries that broke away from the old Soviet way of life.  Did we not learn our lesson in the light of World War III?  Guess not.

What is just as frightening is how these policies are reflected here at home.  The press and educational structures are under attack. The resurgence of McCarthy-type thinking will make us weaker as the goal is to crush any and all dissent. The only thing the new Nero is missing is the fiddle.

Prayer for the Day

Trembling and fearful for our future as a Nation,

We ask you, O God, where are the prophets of old?

Seeing the attempt to destroy our values as a society,

We cry to you, O Lord, for voices of courage.

Do not desert us, O Holy One, in this our hour of need,

But give us the courage to take on impending tyranny.

In the name of the One who stood against Pilate,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

We saw how he was during his first presidency … Putin’s doormat.

            Serhii, a Ukrainian soldier

Presidents may change, but their hostility toward the press doesn’t. The difference lies in how the media respond. Its job isn’t to be liked—it’s to hold power accountable. And history is clear: When the Fourth Estate bends, democracy breaks.

O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

For you have forsaken the ways of your people, O house of Jacob.

Indeed, they are full of diviners from the east and of soothsayers like the Philistines,

And they clasp hands with evil.
