In spite of the chilly mornings and cool days, in the afternoon there are bees all over the garden area. The Mason House hasn’t shown any activity yet but I expect it will soon And then there are the wasps and hornets. We try to avoid them because they can sting badly if they feel threatened, and the hornet can sting many times.
So, we have to ask ourselves, what’s good about wasps? Evidently, there area variety of wasps for eating the bugs and their larvae that attack vegetable plants and the much feared ash-borer. Sometimes we wonder how garden and tree pests developed, but in nature’s way, there are little predators that feast on them: wasps.
Wasps and hornets do create nests in our building structures, so we should discourage that, to be sure, because they can also create nests in trees and bushes. As we look at the incredible variety in creation, we must be in awe of the infinite mind of God.
Prayer for the Day
God who lies beyond our vision, open the eyes of our hearts,
Moving us beyond the limits of our senses; . , Christ who calls us to serve you in this world,
Expand our sight to see all that is in the world around us.
Grant, O God, that your Spirit empowers us,
To care for the world and all its creatures.
In the name of the One who shows us how to care,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
If we took wasps out of the equation, many of the leaf-and-seed-eating insects they prey on would just go on unchecked.
- Heather Holm, biologist and pollinator conservationist
A grain in the balance will determine which individual shall live and which shall die, which variety of species will increase in number and which shall decrease or finally become extinct.
- Charles Darwin, biologist, explorer (1909-1882)
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements?
Surely you know! – Or stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone
When the morning stars sang together, and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
