It’s a cool rainy morning and we’ve had pretty good fortune in our weather – mid 80s, interspersed with rain, quite unlike other parts of the country. The heat that is soaring throughout the Southwest, Texas, Louisiana, and even parts of Florida has created problems in agriculture and construction.
How inconceivable it is, then, for those heat-affected states to pass legislation requiring the banks and companies they invest in not to use ESG as their investment strategies. Texas is the leader in this short-sighted approach, stating that we should not consider the environmental, social, or governance issues in our investments.
In fact, a coalition of 20 attorneys general from right-wing states oppose a climate disclosure rule of the Securities and Exchange Commission. As Christians, don’t you want to know how your money is invested? It’s not enough just to refuse investing in guns or fossil fuels. Shouldn’t we look beyond the highest return and invest in those companies that are consonant with our stated values?
Prayer for the Day
God of the good green earth, protect us from avarice,
The need to have more and more of what money can buy;
God of the jaguar, whale, and crickets in our gardens,
Be with us in our decisions about the resources we seek.
God of the heavens above where eagles and finches soar,
Guide us in the choices we make for they impact the creation.
In the name of the One who is our guide,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Disclosures that quantify climate risks can help realign decision-making towards building a resilient climate economy. This creates positive feedback loops to drive further adaptive measures.

When collectively, businesses everywhere are able to accurately measure their carbon footprint, it allows us to collectively make more informed decision.

Therefore, walk in the way of the good, and keep to the paths of the just.
For the upright will abide in the land, and the innocent will remain in it,
But the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be uprooted from it.
Proverbs 2: 20-22
