If you think the heat on land, especially in the Southwest and reaching up from Texas into the mid-portion of the country is overwhelming, consider Atlantic Ocean heat close to 100 degrees off the coast of Florida. That heat is killing people just more subtly than the heat in Phoenix.
It’s killing the coral, which supports more than one-quarter of marine life on the planet. Not only is coral a source of food for many but coral serves as a buffer against higher sea levels and raging storms. Without coral much of our sea life will die.
Our climate crisis is being fueled by – well, fuel. Many species of fish depend on the coral, living breathing coral. The decline in ocean biodiversity should be extremely troubling for just as much as the world depends on the food we grow, it also depends on the food from the sea. And Congress just dithers along continuing to give into the oil and gas lobbies.
Prayer for the Day
Seeking simple answers in our complex world, we are frustrated,
Unable to understand what is demanded of us, we turn inward;
Refusing to acknowledge our own complicity and frailty,
We do not see the strength that comes from you, O God.
Move us beyond our fears and give us faith to seek even deeper faith,
The faith that shows us how to care for your creation.
In the name of the One who points the way,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
There is a need to develop climate-adaptive fisheries management. Also, the findings highlight the importance of biodiversity conservation measures and how important it is to mitigate carbon and climate change.
- William Cheung, University of British Columbia
Addressing the climate and biodiversity crises forces us to radically change our economic models, moving away from economic growth to a more sustainable future
- Caroline Lucas, Member of Parliament
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements – surely you know!
On what were its bases sunk, or who laid the cornerstone
When the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
Job 38: 4-7
