Oh, the joys of living in an old house! The kittens who are no longer kittens, now being two years old, are usually at the top of the basement steps awaiting their breakfast. When they weren’t there this morning, I wondered what on earth could be wrong. A further investigation showed they were chasing a small field mouse.
The poor creature looked terrified but was too quick for me to get something over it to throw it outside. But it wasn’t too quick for the kittens, one of which had caught it not in any way I could extricate a living creature.
How did that mouse get into the house I wondered? Into the basement that I thought was sealed from such intruders? Old houses are such joys at times with the various additions and changes over the years. That little mouse looked so frightened before being caught by my little predator. Then I wondered if there are more.
Prayer for the Day
During this season of longer days, open our eyes to your light,
So we can look through the windows of your majesty;
Even in storms may we see your grace in the world around us.
Bringing us new visions of your world, full of possibilities.
Be with us, O Lord, as we begin to emerge from the winter
And help us to always work for your kingdom.
In the name of him who came to show us the way,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Most people these days chase new things - new houses, new cars, new objects. But, they don't realise that old houses, old cars, and old objects have something that new things don't have - their history and culture.
- Avijeet Das, Indian essayist
Tearing down an old house and building a new one is one of the most wasteful things we can do as human beings.
- Grace Potter, American singer, songwriter
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
