With the British television program in the 1960s That Was the Week That Was, America was introduced to the world of political satire. American television created Saturday Night Live and Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show. However, this past week contains not the seeds of satire but of tragedy.

The same day that a mob was incited to attack the Capitol the United States had its highest death toll from Covid, almost 3900 persons. At the present time more than 132,000 people are hospitalized.  In addition, the roll out of the vaccines is stumbling over the inability of states to vaccinate people.

The New Jersey website crashed with people trying to sign on for the vaccine. Some states like Florida left vaccination plans up to counties.  Just like the initial response o this disease, there is no national plan. And this fall back on the lack of national leadership. Moreover, the so-called national leadership is in chaos.

Prayer for the Day

Like a people wandering in the wilderness we turn to you, O God,

   For so many are worshipping the golden calves of power;

Distraught as our hospitals are overflowing with the sick and dying,

   We look to your wisdom to give us insight and strength.

Move us from this night of crisis into the daylight of hope

   And help us to overcome the chaos of the day.

In the name of him who is our guide,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

America’s health care system is neither healthy, caring, or a system.

                        - Walter Cronkite, CBS newscaster (1916-2009)

When contemplated in its extreme almost any power looks dangerous.

                        - Ruth Bader Ginsburg, U.S. Supreme Court Justice (1933-2020)

Have they no knowledge, these evildoers,

   Who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God?

There they shall be in great terror as they have never seen,

   For God will scatter the bones of the ungodly;

They will be put to shame for God has rejected them.

                           Psalm 53: 4-5
