There’s almost too much news from too many fronts to allow us to try to keep a sense of perspective. Between politics and continued warnings of the impact of global warming, we are really overwhelmed. This indictment or that failed plea deal are more than seemingly little things because they divert us from the real issues we face today.
For the last 50 years or so climate scientists have been warning us about the way we have been living and its impact on the future. But the drive for profits from fossil fuels and the fear by politicians of losing financial support from Big Oil continue to keep us from really tackling this issue.
The Supreme Court cleared the way for the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a 300-mile gas line opposed by many community and environmental groups, giving Joe Manchin the victory he wanted. As he savors the returns on his investments, maybe he, like some others in Congress, should look at the world they are creating for their grandchildren.
Prayer for the Day
Living in this time, O God, we fear of losing what we have:
Old ways of living with our comforts and possessions;
Confronted by this time of change, O God, we want the familiar,
For we do not understand so much that is happening.
Grant that we have hope, O Lord, for a future we cannot yet see,
But which opens to us our vision of transformation.
In the name of the One who is the voice of hope,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Legislators seemed to forget that front and center of our ‘national interest’ is the social, physical, and economic well-being of our people—many of whom are environmental justice communities in the path of MVP’s aging pipe.
- Roberta Boudurant, from Preserve Bent Mountain, a community organization
Mountain Valley could not build their pipeline in compliance with the law, so they appealed to Congress to interfere with the courts, skirting both our legal system and Constitution.
- Chase Huntley, The Wilderness Society
The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;
For God founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.
Who may ascend to the hill of the Lord or stand in God’s holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart and does not swear by false idols.
Psalm 24:1-2
