In the wake of Uvalde and Buffalo, not to mention the several dozen mass shootings this year alone, the Supreme Court in all its idiocy has come down with a ruling on guns that is beyond belief. The idea that we should live as we did in the 18th century is lubricous. Now, anyone can obtain a concealed weapon to use in a subway or supermarket – after all, there were no subways or supermarkets in the 18th century.
This unbridled right stands in sharp contrast to how the Court examines rights under the Fourth Amendment, for instance, which guarantees people the right to be secure in their “own persons, houses, papers and effects.” However, police use warrantless searches all the time, sometimes with guns blazing.
But now that Supreme Court judges have special protections not even extended to Federal judges, they don’t have to worry. Oh no, their children are not in public schools where they are exposed to gun violence. They aren’t on city streets where guns are so available. They have made for a less safe America.
Prayer for the Day
Hear a just cause, O Lord, we cry, as guns proliferate our Nation,
Give ear to our sounds of grief as children are murdered;
Rise up, O Lord, and confront the evil around us, we cry,
Not to mention the idiocy of narrow thinking.
Help us, O Holy One, in our hour of need against gun violence,
And protect us from those who use guns for power.
In the name of the One who is with us in our hour of need,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
This deeply destructive decision will unleash even more gun violence on American communities. Instead of upholding common-sense safeguards to reduce gun violence, it will only put more guns in public spaces and open the floodgates to invalidate gun safety laws in more states.
- Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Senator Connecticut
We lose eight children and teenagers to gun violence every day. If a mysterious virus suddenly started killing eight of our children every day, America would mobilize teams of doctors and public health officials. We would move heaven and earth until we found a way to protect our children. But not with gun violence
- Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Senator, Massachusetts
Why, O Lord do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
Psalm 10: 1
