It’s been a warm October, warmer than I remember last year. We’ve had a few chilly spells but for the most part, nights in the 50s and days in the low 70s. The ten-day forecast, for what it’s worth tells us that this spate of nice weather will change with the cool and damp coming in.
The trees are finally beginning to show color. The warm sun has continued to keep them green even up to now. We think warmth is nice, but it’s really not. The warmth we’re experiencing is just one more sign of the climate warming up because of our outdated reliance on fossil fuels.
Big oil continues to fund many of those holding elected office. And big pharma is right behind. There must be a better way to fund elections than to rely on the money that big business pours into certain races for the role of money is like a dragon spewing fire. That dragon must be slain.
Prayer for the Day
We’ve been told the love of money is the root of all evil,
But you know, O Lord, that we rely so much on it;
We’ve been told how we blind ourselves to temptation,
But, you know, O God, that it’s so easy to do.
Shake us awake so we not only see the evil around us
But that we commit ourselves to actually taking it on.
In the name of the One who calls us to action,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The flood of money that gushes into politics today is a pollution of democracy.
Theodore H. White, historian of elections (1915-1986)
The undue influence of money in our politics is like a cancer underlying other cancers, an issue underlying other issues.
Marianne Williamson, American writer and political activist
The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it to be a high wall.
Before destruction one’s heart is haughty, but humility goes before honor.
Proverbs 18: 11-12
