The daily death count from the Coronavirus has almost receded from our minds.  But not so for the surviving family members of the more than 708,000 persons who have died from this disease, including about 175,000 children who have been left without a primary caregiver.

The illness and death statistics are highest in those states with the lowest vaccination rates.  One would think that anyone with an ounce of sense would draw a parallel but, unfortunately, this vaccination issue has become so politically polarized that many people refuse to recognize this as a public health issue, not a political one.

Much of the doubt comes from a distrust in government.  And little wonder, when certain politicians have stoked the distrust even as they benefit financially from their political connections, much of which is hidden. But as someone said centuries ago, what does it matter if you gain the whole world and lose your soul?

Prayer for the Day

Examining our ways, we come before you, O God our Maker,

    For we are a people more concerned with wealth than truth;

Lifting up our hearts to you, O Creator and merciful Judge,

We ask that you transform us into a caring people.

Clothe us with wisdom and invest us with thoughtfulness

And help us eradicate the fount of unrighteousness.

In the name of the One who offers us a way,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

This pandemic has magnified every existing inequality in our society – like systemic racism, gender inequality, and poverty.”

            Melinda Gates, philanthropist

This pandemic has exposed the political and social fissures that have undermined public confidence and the spirit of national cooperation that is so necessary for public health to be effective.

Michael T. Osterholm, Center for Infectious Disease and Policy

Let me hear what the Lord God will speak, when God speaks peace to the people,

To the faithful, to those who have not turned back to folly.

Yes, God’s rescue is near for those who fear the Lord, whose glory will be in the land,

For kindness and truth have met, justice and peace have kissed.

Psalm 85: 8-10 (Trans. Robert Alter)
