Oops! So sorry for saying that Congress does nothing. The House Judiciary Committee has just proposed sweeping changes to the immigration fee system. Under the proposal asylum seekers would have to pay $1,000 even to apply for protection. That’s one way to cut down on people seeking protection from persecution, including religious, ethnic, racial, or political. And that’s not all.
Sponsors of special immigrant juveniles, kids who came in without a parent or guardian, get charged $3500. The idea is to make it virtually impossible for anyone to apply for special forms of protection. What a welcoming county we are.
The point is to raise $45 billion so we can break up more families by deporting more people, like your ancestors and mine who came to America to build this nation into what it became – a powerhouse. Now, as we turn inward, we will pay a heavy price as more students go elsewhere, more businesses look to other countries for opportunities, and more scientific researchers look for better places to do their work.
Prayer for the Day
God beyond all comprehension,
You pour out your mercy upon us;
Open our eyes blind to the world around us,
And our ears deaf to the cry of the sick and the poor.
Your Holy Spirit is a window to all around us
Breathing your power and your strength on us
In the name of the One who shares your spirit with us
Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen
Thoughts for the Day
Nearly all Americans have ancestors who braved the oceans – liberty-loving risk takers in search of an ideal – the largest voluntary migrations in recorded history… Immigration is not just a link to America’s past; it’s also a bridge to America’s future.
George W. Bush, President
No matter where you are from, no matter what your background is, no matter what your socioeconomic status is, every person can achieve his or her dreams.
Ileana Ros Lehtinen, U.S. Congress (R-Fla)
Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow. And the people shall say Amen!
