Hurricane Season

You should enjoy the weather for today and tomorrow because the rest of the week looks grim – rain, with a slight letup on Tuesday, but it’s rain for the rest of the week.  We could be optimistic, saying, “This is New Jersey where the forecast changes at least twice daily.”

It’s also the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, and NOAA has actually named 25 storms for 2024.  Tropical waves area already forming, the water being warmer due to global warming.  Some towns haven’t even finished replenishing their beaches, which are sure to go in a major storm.

And the paths are erratic, bouncing from one shore to another, all the way from Florida to Nova Scotia, well north of Maine.  We’ve been pretty lucky over the past few years since the aftermath of Ida came barreling through New Jersey leaving over a hundred dead, including 30 here in New Jersey, many of them inland. If we don’t make some drastic changes, it will only get worse.

Prayer for the Day

As we begin to move into the summer season,

   We do so with both joy and trepidation;

Forecasts of hurricanes weigh on our minds,

As we remember the bad ones we have had.

Turn us around, O Holy Creator, so we honor the earth

And elect those political leaders who will do so as well.

In the name of the One who calls us to task,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

Much of Manhattan and the Eastern Shore of Maryland may join the Atlantic Ocean in our lifetimes. Entire Pacific island nations will disappear. Hurricanes will bring untold destruction.

Bill McKibben, from The Global Warming Reader

More and more Americans are experiencing the direct impacts of climate change, from wildfires in California to devastating hurricanes in the Southeast to drought in the Southwest. And they are choosing candidates who are ready to do something about it.

Michele Lujan Grisham, Governor, New Mexico

Have you not known?  Have you not heard?

Has it not been told you from the beginning?

Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?

     Isaiah 40: 21
