Just like us on the East Coast having real fallout from Hurricane Ida several years ago, the fallout from Helene will last for a long time. Tiny towns and the good-size city of Asheville will be feeling the effects for more than a few weeks or months. Some small towns were literally wiped off the map while Asheville is a mess.
We tend to think of hurricanes as coastal events, but the last few storms we’ve had show they affect more than the coast. The overheated ocean really did a number on the interior. Last night VP candidate Vance touted the U.S. as “the cleanest economy in the world.” You’ve got to be kidding.
Walz shot back with the report that Trump had traded a promise of no holds barred in exchange for money from fossil fuel billionaires. Although their exchange was relatively polite, hurricanes are not. No matter who wins in November, the climate crisis has to be addressed or we will rue the day that it wasn’t
Prayer for the Day
Filing miserably in how we have treated your creation,
We turn our eyes and ears to the insignificant;
Looking for easy solutions without changing our lifestyles,
We shrug and wonder what can be done.
But you, O God, shake us awake with violent storms
Forcing us not to ignore how we have failed you.
In the name of the One who opens out eyes,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
We’ve had these shocking amounts of rain. It’s hard to imagine where you’re safe.
Bill Hunt, NC State University
The situation is just getting worse. Every decade, the average annual flood losses in the U.S. is roughly doubling. It’s unsustainable.
Chad Berginnis, Association of State Floodplain Managers.
Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord. I have no good apart from you.”
As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble in whom is my delight.
Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;
Their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out,
Nor take their names upon my lips
Psalm 16: 1-4
