Immigrants All

Exhausted.  That’s probably how many of us feel after the election which took so much energy from all sides of candidates and electoral questions.  We’re trying to garner strength to face what might – or will – come.  We’re not sure, but many of us are fearful of images of people being dragged out of factories or even houses.

And hearing Steven Miller talk about ramping up the denaturalization of U.S. citizens is beyond the pale.  And the idea that U.S. born children would be thrown out of the country is even more appalling.  Not much to be thankful for, some of us say.

Thanksgiving should be more than simply gorging ourselves and watching football.  It should also be a time to remember that the people who built this Nation came from someplace else, including the immigrant bashers.  We are all immigrants, every single one of us, and this Nation would not be what it is without that fact.

Prayer for the Day

Like the Psalmist, we cry aloud to you, O God,

   For we are fearful and we are also tired;

Facing an uncertain future as we still hear words of hate,

   We look to you, O Lord, for strength in these times.

Be with us, Holy One, as we remember the courage of others,

   Those who sailed the seas to establish a Nation of freedom.

In the name of the One who gives us strength,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

We’ve marched so much. We’re tired of dong the same thing over and over again.

            David Hogg, student who survived Parkland shooting in Florida

[T]he diffusion of restrictions on peaceful assembly and expression accompanies a broader toolkit of authoritarian strategies that have become standardized over the past 15 years in response to people-power movements.

            Erica Chenowith, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard

Give ear to my words, O Lord, give heed to my sighing.

   Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray.

O Lord, I the morning you hear my voice;

   In the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;

   Evil will not sojourn with you

            Psalm 5: 1-4
