It Can Happen Here

Campaign language is often more incendiary than what actually happens after someone is elected; however, we who care for the rights of our entire American society should take note of the words of Mike Davis, the possible Attorney General nominee, who not only has threatened to deport U.S. citizens but to put political opponents in jail.

Mike Davis served as nominations chair to Chuck Grassley’s Judiciary Committee, and was responsible for getting Kavanagh, Gorsuch, and Barrett nominated to the Supreme Court.  His website notes he is against “woke” teaching and wants to get rid of the 14th Amendment.  He has threatened to fire anyone in the Justice Department who does not agree with his vision for America.

In the early 1930s, the religious establishment went along with Hitler, afraid of losing power or facing even such worse consequences.  Hence, the Confessing church of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Niemöller, which preached the Gospel as others folded. Maybe we’re not there yet – but it seems to be coming close.

Prayer for the Day

O God, we often live as if we do not need you,

    Pretending that life is what we make it;

And in those exceptional moments of openness to you,

     We often assume it was given for ourselves alone.

 Awaken us by your spirit to a fuller dimension of faith

     Leading us to find in our neighbors the opportunities for love.

  In the name of the One who teaches us a new way to live,

     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

We’re going to deport a lot of people, 10 million people and growing – anchor babies, their parents, their grandparents. We’re gonna put kids in cages. It’s gonna be glorious. We’re gonna detain a lot of people in the D.C. gulag and Gitmo.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

            Rev. Martin Niemöller, who survived a concentration camp (1992-1984)

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
