"Just Get Over It"

Do we really now live in a Nation where school shootings are just “a fact of life” and that we need to “just get over it?”  How does anyone “get over” the fact that someone can have an AR-15 style rifle and murder students and teachers?

How does one “get over” the fact that we have a Supreme Court that thinks it’s just perfectly fine to let just about anyone have a gun – with the exception of a narrow group of convicted domestic abusers?  And the gun industry is just licking its chops over its suit against a federal regulation on ghost guns, easily built from kits sold on the internet.

Of course, certain politicians, fearful of the gun lobby, say, this is not the time to discuss policy and that the families of the dead need our thoughts and prayers.  For them, it’s never the time to discuss any policy no matter how many are killed or how often such preventable tragedies like Sandy Hook, Uvalde and Winderhis exist.  After all, we should just all “get over it.”

Prayer for the Day

So many dead from the scourge of gun violence, we cry out,

   So many whose lives will never be the same, we despair;

Yet, politicians cringe, refusing to take action even as children die,

    Fearful that their contributions will disappear.

What is it, O God, that we need to wake us up?

    How can we stop the specter of death haunting us?

In the name of the One who shows us the way,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

And this is precisely the moment when we should be debating and implementing those policies — before some other American community joins the mournful list that includes Newtown, Conn.; Parkland, Fla.; Uvalde, Tex.; and so many others. The list to which Winder is now added.

Thoughts and prayers won’t stop a speeding bullet.

O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous,

   You who test minds and hearts, O righteous God.

God is my shield, who saves the upright in heart.

   God is a righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day.
