Lent 11: The Dogs of War

We usually wake up on a Saturday morning, hoping that the chaos of the world will let us be – at least for a weekend. But today we wake up to the news that, in coordination with the Netanyahu government, we have bombed Iran.  In the words of our esteemed leader, “Bombs will be dropping everywhere.”

Telling Iranians to “take cover” and then adding “When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take.”  Calling this “a major combat operation,” this “special military operation” has been in the works for months, coordinated with Israel. And who are the first fatalities of military consequence?  Five students at a girls’ school.

Iran, of course, s retaliating, sending missiles into other countries in the Middle East, such as Bahrain and Qatar. Truth Social claimed “Iran tried to interfere in 2020, 2024 elections to stop Trump, and now faces renewed war with United States,” followed by another post about Fulton County, Georgia.  Is this what the attack is about?

Prayer for the Day

Unleashing the dogs of war, let us seek peace, O God,

For we know war only causes death and destruction.

Thinking that bombs and missiles can settle differences,

Let us return to diplomacy and negotiation.

Let us not open a Pandora’s box not knowing what lies inside,

But keep closed the evils that results in such action,

In the name of the One who seeks peace,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The developments in Iran are greatly concerning. We remain in close contact with our partners in the region. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to safeguarding regional security and stability. Ensuring nuclear safety and preventing any actions that could further escalate tensions or undermine the global non-proliferation regime is of critical importance.

Statement by EU, on learning of attack

History is proof that Iranians have never surrendered to foreign aggression. This time too, the response of the Iranian nation will be decisive and will make the aggressors regret their criminal act.

            Iranian Foreign Ministry statement

Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions;

They have not exposed our iniquity to restore your fortunes,

But have seen oracles for you that are false and misleading.
