How often is it that in our lives when we seek health care, we are treated by a nurse instead of a doctor? Nurses bear the brunt of America’s hath care system, if you can call the haphazard way health care is delivered a “system.” Reliance on nurses with professional certifications, such as anesthesiology or psychiatry has become a bedrock of delivering health care.
Historically, graduate students have been able to borrow up to the full cost of their graduate educations, including obtaining special certifications for nurses; however, the passage of the OBBBA last summer enabled the Department of Education, the one that the right wing wants to abolish, to create a new kind of rule, dividing “professional” and “graduate” students.
The DOE is relying on an outdated 1980s classification of professions which does not include graduate nursing programs, such as for nurse practitioners, as “professional.” It’s difficult to work your way through a 1,000-page bill to see what we never expected. I wonder who came up with this one, not to mention other little known pieces in the bill. The world has changed; so has nursing. Go to regulations.gov and comment.
Prayer for the Day
All embracing God, you show us loving kindness;
Bind us together in your community of care;
Teach us, we pray, how to share your love which knows no end
So we are truly live as your examples in this world.
May we learn to love without fear as did the One you sent,
In the name of the One who is your gift of love,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The trained nurse has become one of the great blessings of humanity, taking a place beside the physician and the priest.
Dr. William Osler, Canadian physician and founder of Johns Hopkins University
Let us never consider ourselves finished, nurses. We must be learning all of our lives.
Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing (1820-1910)
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and God’s ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against evildoers, cutting off their remembrance from the earth
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34: 15-18
