Little Respite for the Weary

I don’t know about you but I am now just overwhelmed with political news from this state or that, this candidate or that, and it seems like it’s time to get a cup of coffee or tea and just try to sit back from it all – at least for a few moments of sanity, which seems to be in short supply these days.

For the next several days the air will be pleasantly crisp, the nights cooler mixed with the possibility of frost.  Just a few bees still trying to get that last little bit of food before they store down for the winter.  The morning sun is different than it is in the summer, and those of us who are concerned about an early winter are taking our snow blowers   in for the annual tune-up.

Looking out on the deck, I keep trying to figure out where I can put the tender plants, each window being full already.  And if that’s all I need to worry about today, I realize how fortunate I am as many others struggle with higher utility bills, not to mention the ever present threat of ICE raiding our neighborhoods for hard working immigrants who are the backbone of tour economy, not to mention contributors to the Social Security system which most of them will never collect on.

Prayer for the Day

Now a time for both gratitude and concern, O God,

   As this election cycle begins its final period;

Indeed, O Lord, we are grateful for your presence,

Strength for your sustenance in our everyday lives.

In the beauty of autumn, let us not forget that many,

Struggling, need the help and support of our communities.

In the name of the One who loves all as his neighbors,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

No one can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves, does it become a common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.

Wendell  Berry, American poet, essayist (1934-2026)

The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. [The] heart withers if it does not answer another heart. [The] mind shrinks away if [it] hears only the echoes of [its] own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.
Pearl S. Buck, American novelist (1892-1973)

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power with an understanding beyond all measure.

The Lord lifts up the downtrodden and castes the wicked to the ground.

            Psalm 147: 5-6
