In the midst of all the political news, nationally and state, some of us are worried about other news stories, such as the small bylines of this town or that flooded and evacuated, or the polar bears spending more time on land (of course, most of us will never get to where polar bears live), or the extinction of a cactus in Florida due to rising sea levels.
Yes, Menendez was found guilty on all counts and we wonder if he will resign or go through the indignity of expulsion, which Cory Booker intends to bring, and yes, just about all of the former Trump opposition, worried about their own political futures, are falling into line, but few are paying attention to what is really going on around us.
We talk about the symptoms of our impending climate catastrophe as if it’s only the weather; we don’t take seriously the Heritage Foundation 2025 plan to gut the EPA and NOAA, not to mention health and safety agencies; we really don’t think we will revert to a 1900 society. But, look around you and observe what is really going on.
Prayer for the Day
Searching for truths you would impart to us, Holy One,
We place our minds and hearts before you this day;
Seeking to discern the meaning of your Word for our lives,
We pray for understanding and wisdom to guide us.
Open our eyes to the world around us, O Lord,
Enabling us to act to protect the integrity of your creation.
In the name of the One who imparts understanding,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
This [extinction of Key Largo Cactus] is just one example of what's happening to dozens of species, and people need to understand that if we don't do something, this loss is just going to accelerate.
George Gann, Institute for Regional Conservation, Florida
Currently, we have a lot of other flooding that’s not related to the dam, and that has made it so that there are no major road routes that are consistently accessible in our county.
Alex Haglund, Washington County Illinois Emergency Management
Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth;
Give me an undivided heart to revere your name.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart
And I will glorify your name forever.
