Looking Beyond the Bleakness We See

We are now entering the last week of Advent, when we look to the promise of Christmas, a world filled with possibilities. Although possibilities are realized, or at least hoped for, in every new baby, the possibilities we hope for in this baby are different.  We drive by churches, almost all with banners proclaiming Christmas Eve worship, which can become a time to not forget the world outside but to think beyond it.

Although much of the world is bleak, certain areas show small pockets of hope.  For the most part, the genocidal war in Gaza has stopped. Christians in the West Bank have put up trees – one must wonder how a German custom became such a universal symbol of Christmas. Christian organizations are working to help Palestinians in this dire time.

We look for hope and peace, but in Ukraine and Sudan there is none. Putin, dreaming of a resurgent Soviet Union, blames Ukraine for the continuing war, and the factions in Sudan, especially the rebel groups, go on killing people. We try to move beyond the horrors we read about, but it is difficult. Moving into this week, perhaps remembering the world Jesus was born into tells us that world of violence can be overcome.

Prayer for the Day

Caught between old fears and new hopes, we come to you, O God,

    In this Advent season close to the end of our calendar year;

But we remember that Advent is the beginning of a new year

    Even as we consider uncertain futures and possibilities.

Move us, O God, beyond a winter of faith so we have hope,

    Making us open to your Spirit sharing our hope with others.

In the name of the One who gives us strength in these times,

     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

…The world offers itself to your imagination,

Calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting—

                                    Mary Oliver, American poet, from “Wild Geese” (1935-2019)

Logic will get you from A to Z. Imagination will get you everywhere.

                                    Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist (1879-1955)

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

   Steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

Happy are the people who know the festal shout,

   Who walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance.

They exult in your name all day long and extol your righteousness.

                                    Psalm 89: 14-16
