Making Putin Happy

Today’s weather forecast looks like I brought a piece of Finland back home with me, except that Finns and other Nordics are used to it and know how to handle it.  The roads are constantly plowed and the trains function smoothly and efficiently.  That’s pretty much true of the northern countries – and U.S.  states. Here in New Jersey, however, we aren’t used to this kind of weather, especially snow and ice.

It was about the same weather yesterday in Copenhagen where thousands of people took to the streets but below freezing in Nuuk where over 10,000 protested the threats from the White House to take over Greenland.  The imposition of 10% tariffs will only make the resistance stronger.

One Finn commented that Putin must be thrilled at seeing the potential breakup of NATO. But, of course, this takes the Epstein files off the front page.  And although some Senators and Representatives have spoken out against “taking over” the country, most still remain silent. What on earth is the matter with them?

Prayer for the Day

Like the Psalmist, we cry for wisdom, O Lord,

   We cry for a retreat to sanity from our leaders;

Seeking some stability in a world turned upside down,

    We ask for voices of reason but hear little.

Give us some measure of assurance, O God,

    As we feel the ice melting beneath us.

In the name of the One who holds us together,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Greenland needs to be viewed as our ally, not as an asset, and I think that’s what you’re hearing with this delegation

            Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), in Copenhagen

It’s ridiculous that this has to even be done. But when the president talks about taking Greenland one way or the other way every day this last week or so and that it’s unacceptable if Greenland refuses to be part of the United States, I felt like I needed to make a statement that Republicans disagree.

            Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb), in a statement to the Omaha Times Herald

 Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in their hearts;

   There is no fear of God before their eyes.

For they flatter themselves in their own eyes

   That theier iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;

   They have ceased to act wisely and do good

They plot mischief while on their beds’

   They are set on a way that is not good; they do not reject evil.

            Psalm 36: 1-4
