It’s usually this time of year that I realize how my desk has piled up with papers and pitches or this, that or the other pitch for this, that, or the other organization established to provide some much needed service. So many needs exist in this world and I know I’m not a Melinda Gates who has millions to contribute to the worthy projects that exist.
Making these choices is really difficult and I must say I wonder my donation makes a difference in the overall scheme of things. So I go to Charity Navigator and try to decide which project I should support.
There’s a secret joy in finding some small need that my contribution can help. It seems odd to say but most of our joys are secret, really only known to God. This is probably most true with the deepest joys which may seem strange to the world but, not so to God.
Prayer for the Day
Transformer of lives, Be with us not just in this season of promise
But in every season as we strive to bring your joy to others;
We know we may be the only gospel that people will ever read
So let it be one of living relationships between us and others.
Open us to unfolding the possibilities we are given
To share the joy you give with the world.
In the name of him who embodies your joy,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen
Thoughts for the Day
Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received...but only what you have given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice, and courage.
- St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226)
This then is the fullness of time, when the Son of God is begotten in us. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart, mystic and writer(c.1260 - c 1327)
Your decrees are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them,
The unfolding of you word gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.
With open mouth I pant because I long for your commandments.
Turn to me and be gracious to me as you do towards those who love your name.
Psalm 119: 129-132
