What is it about a police department that would tolerate a captain on the force selling anti-Asian tee shirts?  Last year in a Facebook post, Captain Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s department urged people to order them while they last. What is even more appalling is that County Sheriff Frank Reynolds defended Baker.

And just two weeks ago Beth Moore, a charismatic Bible teacher quit the Southern Baptist Church over its casual way of addressing racism.  Unfortunately, this reflects the recent study that showed people picking churches based on their politics. Racists go to churches that deny racism exists, and so forth.

Jesus as he saw Jerusalem coming down the Mount of Olives wept over the city. From the church Dominus Flevit, one can see the old city.  It is an incredible sight.  Methinks Jesus would weep over the state of churches today that refuse to acknowledge the terrible sin of racism.

Prayer for the Day

Unlike David in the Psalms we do not acknowledge our sin,

   Claiming to be civil, we do not reply to racist remarks;

Our sin is not just against you, O Lord, but others

   Who may not look like us or sound like us.

Grant, O merciful God, not just forgiveness

   But courage as well as we strive to be your disciples,

IN the name of him who welcomes all,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

In this country American means white. Everybody else needs to hyphenate.

            Toni Morrison, writer (1931-2019)

Our true nationality is mankind

           H. G. Wells (1866-1946)

As Jesus came near and the city, he wept

over it, saying: “If you, even you, only

recognized the things that make for peace.
