More than a tad late this morning, I know, but looking for something reminded me not only that I should pay more attention to organizing the stuff in my house but how much stuff I actually have. I have to admit that I sometimes wonder if I think I’m going to make it to the Second Coming – there is so much stuff.
More than the books – we won’t talk about the books – there is just other stuff. There’s the dresses I will never wear again. They’re in good shape, but I’m not. Then there are the plastic storage boxes full of yarn that I have kept over the years – who am I kidding? There are scraps of this, that and the other thing – even if I had an extra 24 hours in a day, I don’t think I would finish all the projects in my head.
Two weeks ago a dear friend died and as I looked around her art room where she made her incredible art, I wondered who would be looking around my pile of stuff, stuff, stuff. So, my new year’s resolution, for it is a new year for me, is to divest myself of stuff that others could use and want. We won’t talk about the books.
Prayer for the Day
How often, O Lord, do we pray for your guidance on how to live,
And then, how often do we ignore the real measure of grace given;
We look around and thank you, Infinite Creator, for the beauty we see,
And realize it is in your creation we should find our guidance.
Be with us, O God, as we seek to do your will with our lives,
And in your infinite mercy, forgive us when we fail.
In the name of the One who holds us to your word’
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Having less often leads us to use our things more often and with more enjoyment, because we're not fighting our way through a welter of unwanted stuff.
- Gretchen Rubin, writer
Our possessions are dictating our free time. Sundays used to be for relaxing and eating, and now they're spent cleaning the garage.
- Cristin Frank, former marketing executive, writer
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
Where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal,
But store up for ourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust consumes ..
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6: 19-21
