COP26 is over. There was such hope when the conference began, or as there? As we listened to world leaders equivocate about the future and saw young people call for more action outside the conference, we have to wonder, what was this all about. It seemed more like a place to strut abut like roosters than to lay the eggs of real climate action.
The real voices of the climate crisis came from the young, mostly girls, many from the Global South who saw past the smokescreen of promises, many of which were made in 2015 at Paris, seven years ago. “we’ll do this by 2025, 2030, 0r 2050,” the last year being one when many of us will have already died.
But my concern for 1.5 goes beyond me. It’s for my granddaughters and the grandchildren we all have, whether our own or the ones that belong to our communities. What kind of world have our so-called great leaders promised them? One where phasing down is fine as long as it doesn’t interfere with corporate or national greed. How sad, how very, very sad.
Prayer for the Day
Complacent with our lives, we avoid painful truths,
Preferring the darkness to the light;
Caught in our own ineptitude, we flounder in despair,
Refusing to accept the truth in the world around us..
Forgive us and move us beyond our self-satisfaction
And bring us into true repentance opening us to your life
In the name of him who is your life in the world,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Climate justice is about tackling the biggest problem humanity has ever faced in an equitable way that understands and takes into account the role of systemic oppression.
Lauren MacDonald, 21-year old activist in the Stop Cambo campaign, Scotland
We are just so tired hearing the rhetoric by these politicians and leaders. How can we trust them to deliver?
Bryce Goodall, COP 26 Coalition, a youth activist movement in the UK
God of vengeance, O Lord, God of vengeance, shine forth!
Rise up, O Judge of the earth, bring down on the proud requital.
How long the wicked, O Lord, how long will the wicked exist?
They utter arrogance, speak it, all the wrongdoers bandy boast,
