Money Talks

Claiming there is an “energy emergency,” we are now told that nature doesn’t count in any decisions to be made for the future of this planet.  The donations made by fossil fuel now pay off, not just for drilling but for destroying any thought of what the results will be.

In 1984, language is turned upside down and inside out.  And that’s precisely what is happening now.  Just wait long enough and wildfires will be deemed good.  Everyone knows that those endangered species just get in the way, so let’s eliminate them and keep drilling until oil covers the landscape and people die from contaminated water.

But the wealthy oil barons need not worry; they paid for a President who would do their bidding and they now have him in their pockets. In some other time, the demand for money from big oil would have been called bribery.  Now, it’s just the cost of doing business.

Prayer for the Day

Waiting for their mother, the wolf pups whimper with hunger,

   But she is no more, only an obstacle in the way, now gone;

Unable to transverse the tundra, the caribou start to die off,

As they are sickened by sludge leaking from the pipelines.

How long, O God, will we continue to poison ourselves,

While the greed of oil and gas rule the Nation?

In the name of the One who cares for the earth,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Our leader has declared a fake emergency about energy, so that we can do more of something—drilling for oil and gas—that causes the actual emergency now devastating our second most populous city.

Bill McKibben in The New Yorker

The climate crisis is a global issue that demands urgent action. Failure to act will lead to more wildfires, droughts, and harm to communities and businesses both in the United States and around the world.

Jonathan Pershing, former deputy climate envoy under Biden

Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and spreads its wings toward the south?

Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes its nest on high?

It lives on the rock an makes its home in the fastness of the rocky crag.

From there it spies the prey; its eyes see far away,

Its young suck up blood, and here the slain are, there it is.

            Job 40: 26-30
