New Year, New Resolve

As we look at this New Year just dawning, year, we should reflect on the past year and how this year can be different.  The past year saw enormous reversals in policies that affect our environment. These changes and reversals will directly impact us and our future here on Planet Earth.

Opening up federal wilderness areas and certain seabed areas, previously protected, to destructive fossil fuel and rare earth metal exploration will contribute to the enormous increase in severe weather events which have resulted in the destruction of property and preventable deaths.

Even as more of us are now using solar to heat and cool our homes, current energy policies will hurt all of us in the long run. Greed and the desire for wealth has become the basis of decision-making, and it will come back to bite even us. Turning this around will not be easy but it something we must resolve to do in this year for the sake of our future and that of our children.

Prayer for the Day

In the cold of January in this New Year just beginning,

     Our thoughts often crowd out the true purpose of our lives;

Bring us back to remembering who we are as your people,

To not just resolving to do better but to actually doing better

My we be your instruments in realizing the kingdom,

As we seek to share your promise with the world.

In the name of the One who shares your promise with us,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Preservation of our environment is not a liberal or conservative challenge.  It’s common sense.

            Ronald Reagan, actor, President (1911-2004)

If we all get together, we can truly make a difference, but we must act now. The window of time is closing.

            Jane Goodall, scientist (1934-2025)

In the heavens God set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom,

From the wedding canopy and like a strong man runs its course with joy.

Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them,

And nothing is hidden from its heat.

            Psalm 19:4-6
