Last weekend some Republican lawmakers faced angry crowds at their town halls. And it wasn’t just the price of eggs. Cuts at VA hospitals which includes veterans who are workers have upset veterans accessing services. Polls show that 6 in 10 veterans voted for the new regime which is clearly betraying their interests. At least 80,000 jobs may be on the chopping block.
But it’s not just living veterans who are getting the shaft. Several weeks ago civil war historian Kevin M. Levin noted that names of black Civil War soldiers and women veterans had been scrubbed from Arlington Cemetery’s website. Supreme Court Justices can be buried there. If you look at the website, you will see Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the spouse of her veteran husband Marvin but not Thurgood Marshall.
Several days after the story broke, the website was updated to include a section on African-American burials. Other pages are still missing. Living veterans are still on the chopping block, however, the ones to whom we owe a debt of gratitude but are called “losers” by the new regime head.
Prayer for the Day
Asking for mercy we come to you, Holy Friend,
For we so many still suffer from the impact of war;
Not understanding war’s effect on our souls,
We often do not extend our care to those who need help.
May we learn to embrace as we have been embraced,
And to be as generous as you have been with us.
In the name of the One who embodies your generosity,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
For somebody to go on the news and say we are incompetent or lazy — that is just false.
Future Zhou, an Army veteran, who managed medical supply inventories for
operating rooms, Puget Sound VA hospital, fired in February.
Elon Musk and his buddies would rather just deal with the bottom line and try to save billions of dollars so they can have more tax cuts at the expense of veterans.
Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a veteran
But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your love, answer me.
With your faithful help, rescue me from sinking into the mire;
Let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.
Psalm 69: 13-14
