Nothing Like Ego and Money

In all the grim news from Ukraine, Gaza, and the Horn of Africa, not to mention European elections, it seems we’ve almost forgotten about environmental issues – except for the dreadful heat, of course.  And that’s not going to get much better, at least over the next week or two.

At one point Elon Musk vowed to rid himself of possessions, care for the environment, and look for global peace.  Ah, noting like money and the dream of power to turn a person around.  His space station in Texas has blown tons of debris onto state and national parks, killing birds, destroying nests, and making a general mess.

Musk promised a small ecological footprint, but that hasn’t happened as Musk has planned even larger spacecraft, and the FAA backed off from a new environmental impact study.  Musk, of course, sees nothing but his own public personas he moves ahead to destroy an important habitat.

Prayer for the Day

Asking, O Lord, who may abide in your tent of care and concern,

   We find that the driving forces of ego and power stand outside;

Wondering, O God, if we can tame the influence of wealth,

We learn that money has its own kingdom of destruction.

Embolden us, O Holy One, to take on the powers and principalities,

Those who care not what lies in their paths of desire.

In the name of the One who speaks truth to power,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Here he is saying he is going to save humanity by colonizing Mars, but he is treating the land and the people from around here, including the Indigenous people, like a sacrifice zone.

Christopher Basaldú, anthropologist, Carrizo/Comcrudo Tribe

Neither SpaceX nor the F.A.A. have authorization under the Endangered Species Act for the testing activities they are engaging in, whether there is an anomaly or not.

Dawn Gardiner, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, after a rocket launch

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

It is better to be of a lowly spirit among the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Wisdom is a fountain of life to one who has it, but folly is the punishment of fools.

The mind of the wise makes their speech judicious, and adds persuasion to their lips.
