Now that the midterms are over, the overwhelming results in, we breathe a sigh of relief. No more cell phone messages from people you don’t know making their pitches and an end, hopefully, to nastiness produced by the bottom feeders. Now is the time to get back to real life: inflation, the high cost of food and oil, and a brake on out of control policies that have resulted in so many problems.
In the midst of the elections yesterday, and with the possibility of negotiations with the Iranians on the Strait of Hormus to lower oil prices, the White House ordered air strikes on Iran’s Quesham Island, making Iran and all of us ask, this is a path to peace? The strikes will make the hardliners in Iran only oppose any talks with the US.
Congress still has a lame duck session and we can only hope that neither Congress nor the White House will take advantage of it to push through new Supreme Court justices or make the war situation worse for everyone. This is still a delicate time, perhaps even more so than before the midterms.
Prayer for the Day
We come to you, O God, breathing sighs of relief,
For all our fears of interference have come to naught;
Now, O Lord, we pray that those so terribly affected by living costs,
Caught between high prices and low wages, find respite.
Bring to us, O Holy One, a sense of common purpose,
Beyond politics, to care for the many who need our help.
