It’s not even the middle of January and already I’ve flubbed on my New Year’s Resolution – or should I say, resolutions? I’m trying to winnow my library, but find I end up trying to read the books I am supposed to donate to the used book store in the church basement. And that organization resolution, well, that one is certainly out the window. I wonder if 24 hours more in my day would help.
Looking through my emails ad leaving many unread, I saw one about failure. That’s one right up my alley. The writer noted that lions only catch their prey 25% of the time, which means they fail 75% of the time. The important lesson is after they have failed so often, they don’t give up.
It’s really tempting to give up on something important, even more important than a New Year’s resolution, but we cannot do that, especially as we may fear substantial changes in our lives. Who knows what that 25% object may be and how it could change a life.
Prayer for the Day
Often our attitudes conceal rather than reveal you;
Unveil our eyes, O God, enabling them to share you with others.
Often our hearts are hard and unforgiving towards others;
Soften our hearts, O God, letting them absorb love like a sponge.
Transfigure our lives so we reflect the light of your Spirit,
Transforming the world to reflect your mercy.
In the name of the One who transformed our lives,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt, President (1882-1945)
Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring”
Catherine of Siena, mystic (1347-1380)
God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
Though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea,
Though its waters roar and foam, though he mountains shake with its tumult.
Psalm 46: 1-3
