Oops! Shot the Wrong People

It had to finally happen. The paragons of ICE, defending us from immigrant criminals and rapists shot the wrong man.  Not once, but twice and in different cities more than 2,000 miles apart.  And just blindly unloading their guns at a car with more than one person inside.  Imagine if there had been children.

DHS told ICE to stop “most” vehicle stops.  Most?  Agents carrying guns, shooting at people blindly, and that’s the response? How about taking the guns away? There’s no excuse for permitting such reckless and deadly behavior.

And it’s not just “illegals” that have suffered. This week Physicians for Human Rights released a report on the effect of indiscriminate use of tear gas, Tasers, pepper spray and rubber bullets on protesters, the overwhelming number of whom were peaceful, including our own U.S. Senator Andy Kim while trying to calm people down in front of Delaney Hall.  Spraying someone right in the face can cause lasting damage and has.

Prayer for the Day

In our neighborhoods, on our streets they come.

   Supposedly to protect us against a scourge;

But, O Lord, as they brandish their weapons,

You know no one is safe from their violence.

Bring us to realize, O God, that they only cause harm,

Destroying our sense of security and neighborhood.

In the name of the One who calls us to peace,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The facts surrounding this tragedy remain a matter of significant local concern and necessitate a thorough, objective accounting “Given the gravity of the situation and the understandable anxiety within the Biddeford community, we urge you to prioritize this investigation.”

I live not far from here and it just felt important to pay our respects. It’s important not to pretend like this isn’t happening.

Their mouths are filled with cursing and deceit and oppression

Under their tongues are mischief and iniquity.

They sit in ambush in the villages; in hiding places they murder the innocent.

Their eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; they lurk in secret like a lion in its covert

They lurk that they may seize the poor, seizing the poor to drag them off in their net
